I have always loved this idea Amy. As I say, 'You are a project that has been worked on over all of time.' I feel special !

hope you're well, pal

I am fortunate to have a sea-faring ancestry on my father’s side which has proved to be irresistible and relatively easy to research, ships logs and ports of call records attainable. It stands to reason that my love for the ocean is to be expected. Enjoyed reading, thank you.

Isn’t it fascinating what’s simply in the blood? That’s the wonderful thing about seafaring ancestors, they are often easy to trace. Thanks for reading!

Lovely.

This sort of reminds me of that week during gestation, if you’re carrying a girl, she has the eggs in her that will produce your grandchildren. A magical and mind blowing thought. 🤍

A fascinating thing to think about! Thanks for sharing that association Holly, it’s right on point. And thanks for reading. 🙏

Thanks for another great read! I love looking back at my family history. All of it— the good, the bad, and the ugly. It’s so interesting to see the changes or similarities. To hear all of the stories. To learn things about myself or other people along the family lines— it’s all super interesting.

My partner got me a DNA test, and I learned more about my family and connected with new cousins. I heard new stories about my grandparents and father.

We can get a lot out of digging into the past when it comes to our own family trees. You’re right , we can uncover so many similarities between relatives. For example, I recently realized I am more like my grandmother than either of my parents. So much more is genetic or otherwise passed down than we might think.

I was just imaging my maternal lineage. I only knew my mother and her mother, who are gone now. I know about their lives directly, but those who came before, I know little.

I imagined that all these mothers and grandmothers are here with me today, invisible to the eye, but present in every strand of DNA.

I like to believe they are watching over me, and will welcome my company in the not too distant future, from which I will watch over my daughter and grandaughter.

It’s a lovely thought, Logan. I got much more interested in my ancestors once I did a DNA test. Also, I think once you get a little life experience under your belt, you appreciate what your forebears went through. I love that you were looking at it through the lens of your maternal lineage. Sadly, our matriarchs have often been erased from history.

My grandmother's mother died when she was two. She had always heard she "died on the operating table" so assumed it was appendicitis or something similar.

When she reached her later years she decided to write her autobiography. She was interviewing a cousin or an aunt who told her that her mother had "died on the operating table" after committing suicide

by shooting herself in the chest, apparently because her husband was seeing another woman, who subsequently became my grandmother's not very nice stepmother.

I heard an extended version of the story from a cousin in my generation who was doing genealogy research and discovered my great grandmother's ashes abandoned in a mortuary because nobody had bothered to collect them.

So often these kinds of stories are hidden from the younger generations out of shame.

Wow, what a mind blowing story. Yes, so many of our ancestors’ stories were hidden out of shame. I originally did my test to try to find my mom‘s birth family, and skeletons jumped out of the closet. It turned out there was more than one baby had out of wedlock, and subsequently given up for adoption. Times were different then.
