Powerful! I unfortunately experienced a multi-year burnout and had to quit my life. It really sucked and I’m still not 100% better. So glad you listened to your body and soul! Inspirational article! Nothing’s more important than our health. ♥️
If you are enduring a stressful job, or other situation that puts you in a state of intense anxiety, please don’t wait until your body causes your life to grind to a halt. Take the time to soul-search and set yourself on the path you long for"
If we work ourselves to the burnout, we would reverse the gains made. Work, break, work, break, and if possible, quit when it's costing your whole wellbeing
This is so true. Years ago (pre-COVID) I was running a family business with my mom and writing freelance and was seriously burned out. Then COVID happened. I realized I actually felt way better NOT working at the business or freelancing, and went in a different direction. Now I'm working on building a writing career (for myself, not for external publications) and I've never been more fulfilled.
This resonates with me, especially the part about just starting. I've been thinking about how much 'preparation' or 'research' gets done before I jump into a new venture. Ultimately the best way to learn has always been by doing. It reminds me of a similar sentiment when learning a new skill, to fail and fail fast, so that the trajectory of improvement is greatly accelerated. Failing is the fastest way to learn and also the quickest way to get ahead. Great message about burn out too, thanks for sharing.
Thanks Ilan. I’m an over thinker which means I get stuck by analysis paralysis. I’m glad the idea of starting before you’re “ready” resonates with you. I appreciate your insightful comment.
Amy... thank you SO much for sharing this... 🥹 It actually gave me chills when I got to the end. I've had an incredibly stressful last 6+ years of life (some very intense spells, some more "chronic stress") and I KNOW it's taking a toll on me (hello, awful anxiety). Don't wait... those words. 🥺 I've been getting so many nudges lately about tearing down my "but I can't rock the boat and make other people uncomfortable" mentality. The truth is... "going for it", WILL rock the boat and it most definitely will be rocky at times... and that's OK. That's the biggest refrain for me right now... It’s OK to get messy. ✨️💛
Thank you for reading it, Megan. I hope you do what’s right for you, at the right time for you. Forget what everyone else wants from you - you have just one wild and precious life. (Mary Oliver reference there…) Sending you good vibes ✨
PS anyone who hasn’t read Megan’s Substack yet, do yourself a favour and go check it out. I promise you will laugh.
Great article Amy! Just what I needed. I have had 3 jobs in 2 and half a years, and am in the process of deciding whether I should continue in the job I am.
I want to do my own thing, and luckily I have a financial buffer and some skills I can bring along with me.
My mind is telling me I should stay in the job, but I know deep down it won’t bring me the satisfaction I am looking for. What’s your advice?
Hi Stefano, thank you for your comment. I believe you already know what you need to do. We always have the answers within us if we take the time to be still and listen to our intuition. You have the financial buffer, the skills, and the desire to do your own thing. Perhaps you take the plunge now or perhaps you bide your time a little while longer. If you flipped a coin over this decision, and the outcome made your stomach plunge, you have the answer. Please let me know what you decide!

Thank you for reading Suzanne, and I appreciate your comment. I hope you can recover 100%. I am very lucky to have paused my life when I did.

Sometimes we need that pause to reflect, no matter how it comes about. Glad to hear things worked out for you and congratulations on your writing!

Love this too 🥹 Thank you! So much wisdom in this comment.💖 And, what Mary Oliver recs do you have?! I don't know her books!
She’s one of my favourite poets. I posted a snippet of one of her poems today in fact!
Cool! I'll have to check out her books!
